Sheriff Prevents Fistfight As Sherman-Berman Race In Ca. Gets Ugly


Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) put his arm around the much older Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and challenged him to a physical fight during a heated debate.

The two Jewish Democrats, pitted against each other in a suburban Los Angeles district because of redistricting, have fought a bitter and expensive race.

The debate Thursday at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley grew heated when Sherman sought to push back against Berman's claims of leadership on a number of bills popular in the district.

Calif. Congressman to Introduce Bill Protecting Circumcision


WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman will introduce a bill to prevent cities from banning male circumcision, the California lawmaker's office said.

Sherman's bill, which his office announced Tuesday, comes in response to a measure that qualified recently for the November ballot in San Francisco that would outlaw the circumcision of males under the age of 18, making it punishable by a $1,000 fine and a one-year prison term.

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires that colleges and universities redress racial and ethnic discrimination, or risk losing their federal funding. Thus, if African American or Hispanic students are harassed on campus, they can complain to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), which is mandated to enforce Title VI and ensure that their schools fix the problem.
