They weighed about a pound, came in a plain paper box that had stored sugar, looked like dried cookies and weren’t worth very much.

But to Yuli Edelstein they were priceless.

He would have kosher-for-Passover matzahs for Passover in the Siberian gulag that year, and in the next two years. Each year would be a new adventure, a new “miracle … always a happy ending,” he said.

Aly Raisman Headed For Israel

Gold-winning American Jewish gymnast Aly Raisman has accepted an invitation from Israel Diaspora Affairs Minister Yuli Edelstein for her and her family to make their first visit to Israel.

Raisman, who performs floor routines to the melody of “Hava Nagilah,” won an individual gold medal in her floor exercise last week and a bronze on the balance beam after helping the U.S. women’s team take the gold.

30,000 March in New York’s Celebrate Israel Parade

(JTA) -- Thousands of New Yorkers participated in the annual Celebrate Israel Parade, which marched up Fifth Avenue amid a sea of blue-and-white flags.

The crowd was estimated at about 30,000 for the parade that was led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, accompanied by Israeli Minister of Information and Diaspora Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren, and Israel’s Consul General in New York Ido Aharoni.

Facebook to Monitor Intifada Page, Won’t Remove It

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Facebook will monitor a page calling for a third Palestinian uprising against Israel but will not remove it.

"Third Palestinian Intifada," established on Facebook less than a month ago, calls for a third Palestinian uprising to begin May 15. The page, which as of March 27 had more than 330,000 friends, includes quotes and film clips calling for killing Jews and Israelis, and for "liberating" Jerusalem and Palestine using violence. It also directs users to related content on Twitter, YouTube and elsewhere.

Birthright Gets Record Number of Applicants

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Birthright Israel said it has received a record-breaking number of North American applicants for its free, 10-day trips to Israel.

The organization, which provides all-expense-paid trips to Israel for Diaspora Jews aged 18 to 26, received 40,108 applicants during the seven-day registration period ending Tuesday.

Israel's Minister For Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs, Yuli Edelstein, called it "the most successful project in the Jewish world.”
