Can Of Worms

by Rabbi Dr. Esor Ben-Sorek

Rabbi Benjamin Blech’s book on the “Sistine Secrets” (May 9) has opened a can of worms that sets aside all the good ecumenical progress made between Jews and the Roman Catholic Church over the years.

Not just art authorities, but common anti-Semites, are crawling out of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel to condemn Jewish “blasphemy.”

This book, if published at all, should have been written by non-Jewish art experts, and Rabbi Blech should have limited himself to works of Talmudic and kabbalistic research.
While American rabbis have become masters of ceremonies and jacks-of-all-trades, we are definitely not scholars of Renaissance art.
