While the polls may not be in Gov. Sarah Palin’s favor politically, the Republican nominee for vice president is garnering high praise for her keen fashion sense, from the blood-red Kate Spade heels she wore at last week’s debate with Sen. Joe Biden to her rectangular Kazuo Kawasaki eyeglasses, which have been the talk of many a fashion blog and Web site.
Now her coif — which has already attracted considerable national attention — is coming to a fervently Orthodox wig shop near you, albeit in modest form.
Georgie, a 30-year-old sheitel shop in Borough Park, is offering a simplified version of the hairstyle the Alaska governor wore the night of the vice presidential debate. Shlomo Klein, the vice president of Georgie, said the wigs
have sold “better than expected” since the company began offering them two weeks ago, but declined to give sales figures.
One of the stylists suggested the idea even before women began requesting the “Sarah P” style, long bangs swept off to the side, the slightly wavy hair held half-up and softly twisted, secured with a barrette. It’s a scaled-back version of the stylized chignon look she’s often seen wearing.
“We try to predict trends before they happen, but if we’re beaten to the punch, we try to be inspired by them,” Klein said. The shop also offers the Posh wig, modeled after Victoria Beckham’s angled bob, and Jennifer Aniston’s “Friends” look.
Does buying the sheitel necessarily mean you agree with Palin’s politics? Klein doesn’t think so.
“Personally, I think it’s a fashion statement, similar to the popularity of her eyeglasses,” he said. “It’s not political at all. It’s like when Lady Diana first came on the scene,” her hairstyle was a big seller. Another of their wigs, Hillary, named for Sen. Hillary Clinton, was popular when she was first lady, but hasn’t been requested recently.
The “Sarah P” is available at Georgie in Brooklyn, as well as on the company’s Web site (www.georgiewigs.com). It is available in 44 different hair color combinations and has been selling across America, from Florida to Michigan, Chicago to Los Angeles. The pre-styled wig, made of human hair, is available for $695, about the average Georgie charge for similar sheitels.
