The addition of five new markers to Brooklyn’s Holocaust Memorial Park would be “redundant “ and “seriously distort the historical integrity and balance of the park,” the memorial’s committee said in a statement. The statement noted that the committee “has always recognized and included non-Jewish victims” and is open to doing so in the future.
During a protest earlier this month, some speakers said they opposed the addition of markers in memory of gays, Gypsies, the disabled and others who were killed for reasons other than being Jewish. The committee says it opposes the new markers because those groups are already recognized, and because the city's Parks Department violated an understanding that changes to the design were to be approved by the committee.
