A Summer Send-off

by Shira Vickar-Fox
Editor, Fresh Ink

While Radio City Music Hall is gearing up for this month’s Tony Awards, we can sing about our own prizewinners. Mazal tov to siblings Gabriela and Izzy Geselowitz. They received awards from the National Federation of Press Women for articles in October’s issue. Izzy won first place in the feature story category for “Lies Online,” about the spread of Internet rumors. Gabriela took third place in the opinion category for “The Case for Obama.”

We are very proud and wish them continued success. You can read Gabriela’s ode to Fresh Ink in this, her last issue. She has been a superb contributor and intern at The Jewish Week, and I’m confident we’ll continue to read her byline in the future

It’s been five months since our last paper and aside from the swine flu (excuse me, H1N1) much of our news remains focused on the economy. Teens are not immune to the squeeze felt by many American families. In this issue Victoria Chabot extols the virtues of working. Batya Rosenblum covers the financial effects on Jewish families and offers her homemade pizza recipe. Not only will you save money, but your house will smell great.

On the subject of saving money, we’ve recommended several Holocaust-related movies to rent. Now I know you’re thinking the last thing you want to do is be depressed during summer break, but these movies, and one play, have the opposite effect. Watching them will leave you feeling inspired and full of pride.

This is our final issue for this school year, but I refuse to say goodbye to a number of my dedicated seniors. Instead, I’ll say thank you for your enthusiasm for Fresh Ink over these last few years and please keep in touch. You’ve stuck with Fresh Ink, attended my meetings and put up with all my annoying edits. I think that’s enough to warrant your mention by name — Sydney Appelbaum, Reuben Berman, Melanie Goldberg, Bernie Hodkin, Eliana Holm, and Michal Medows. I have no doubt about your upcoming successes.

Chazak, chazak, v’nitzchazek. As our school year ends, may we continue to share our strength and pride in our achievements. Enjoy your summer.
