Hebrew Charter Principal Named

by Carolyn Slutsky

The Hebrew Language Academy Charter School, slated to open in Brooklyn this fall, has appointed a principal. Maureen Gonzalez-Campbell, an educator experienced in dual-language education, will be responsible for overseeing the hiring of the school’s teachers and administrative staff, helping the school’s board find a suitable building as well as the recruiting students from Community School District 22 in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn to fill the 150 openings for kindergarten and first grade.  Gonzalez-Campbell, 48, speaks Spanish and has experience with multiple languages from her role as bilingual education director for Community School District 27 in Queens. Though she does not speak Hebrew, school organizers say she plans to enroll in the Hebrew language immersion program at Middlebury College this summer.

The
school will not teach Jewish religion, but in addition to public funding plans to raise additional money from private donors and has commitments of $500,000 a year from philanthropist Michael Steinhardt and $250,000 a year from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, according to the Associated Press.
