Republican Bob Turner Wins Race For Weiner's Seat

In a blow to Democrats, a Republican candidate captured the heavily Jewish New York City congressional district previously represented by Rep. Anthony Weiner.

The Republican candidate, Bob Turner, beat his Democratic opponent, New York State Assemblyman David Weprin, in Tuesday’s special election. The Associated Press called the race for Turner shortly after midnight, with the Republican leading Weprin by a margin of 53 percent to 47 percent and more than three-fifths of precincts reporting.

Rabbis: Vote For Weprin Prohibited

It is halachically forbidden to support the congressional campaign of Democrat David Weprin, a group of Flatbush Orthodox rabbis decreed this week.

A letter signed by the group cites the Queens Assemblyman's vote in favor of same-sex marriage in July, insisting the vote was a chillul Hashem, or desecration of God's name.

Weprin Associate Reports Threat As House Race Heats Up

 A consultant and former aide to Democrat David Weprin, who is running in a special election to succeed former Rep. Anthony Weiner, received a threatening voice mail saying "your says are numbered," according to the New York Observer. The paper's political blogger, Azi Paybarah, said he heard the message after it was forwarded to him by the consultant, Mary Simon, a former finance director of Weprin's campaign.
