Why Are Jewish Charities Giving Tzedakah To Clinton?

Sunday, January 18th, 2009 While the givers of tzedakah to Jewish organizations figure out that they, too, were scammed in the Madoff scandal, scammed by boards of trustees that paid millions of Jewish charity money to their fellow trustee, Ezra Merkin, for his very hard work of transferring their billions to Madoff, other givers of tzedakah might start taking a look at where their Jewish charity money goes.

Two Papers, Two Stories; One Paper, Two Stories

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 Two papers tells a different story, or rather the same story in different ways. “Israeli Shells Kill 40 At Gaza U.N. School” (New York Times headline, Jan. 7).   Or was it, “Hamas In Human Shield Atrocity: Uses School As Mortar Lair Where Children Die” (New York Post headline, Jan. 7).

An Arab’s Media Watch

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 Here’s an interesting item in Middle East Times, dissecting media coverage of the Gaza war from an Arab’s perspective. A lot of anti-Israel folks have been raving about Jon Stewart and (what I think is) his uniquely ignorant view of Gaza’s history.

Israel Didn’t Leave, It Lost - Like Blanche DuBois

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 The first rule of pride is this: When they run you out of town, walk like you’re leading the parade.   I’ll give Israel this: When international pressure got to be too much, Israel left Gaza as if it was Israel’s bright idea, “a unilateral ceasefire.”

Sex & The City & A Jewish Newspaper

Monday, January 26th, 2009 Here’s Sam Freedman’s wonderful NYT column on New Jewish Times, a paper I was privileged to be a part of way back when (and a paper that’s still a part of me). Before “Sex & The City,” Candace Bushnell was a part of it, too, but back then who knew?

E-Mail From An Israeli Soldier’s Mom

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 A reader sent this in. It was written by a soldier’s mother, Ilene Bloch-Levy of Shaarei Tikvah, who e-mailed it to friends.- JM   My son came home from Gaza just a few minutes ago. He came home as we had sent him off, only more tired, worn and dirty. Thank you Hashem for bringing him home. To his wife, his brothers and sisters and his loving brood of nieces and nephews. All of us have been waiting patiently these past three weeks to hold him in our arms.

You Can Leave Your Hat On

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 Here’s a fuller, better version of the Media Watch column that appeared in The Jewish Week (Jan. 30, 2009).   Righetous People, Self-Righteous Critics   By Jonathan Mark   Last week on “The View,” one of the guests took a cheap shot at Orthodox women, saying they didn’t look good or dress right, and their idea of modesty (such as covering their hair) was “wacky.”
