Gillibrand: Protect Jewish Cemeteries Of Europe

The desecration, vandalism and redevelopment of Jewish cemeteries in Europe has prompted Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) to ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to press local governments abroad to preserve those sites.

In a letter Tuesday to Clinton, Gillibrand said she was acting on behalf of constituents who have expressed concern “about the threats faced by historic cemeteries, such as those in Lithuania, Poland and Malta.”

Court Refuses To Overturn Beit Yonatan Evacuation in Eastern Jerusalem

(JTA) — A Jerusalem court has rejected an appeal by Jewish families to allow them to continue living in an eastern Jerusalem building.
The Jerusalem District Court ruled Tuesday not to overturn an order to seal off the Beit Yonatan building in Silwan, a predominately Palestinian neighborhood of eastern Jerusalem. Eight families live in the building, which was built without a permit in 2004 by the right-wing group Ateret Cohanim.

Jewish Groups Urge Repeal Of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

(JTA) A coalition of 10 major Jewish organizations is urging Congress to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy.

The coalition, led by the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, sent a letter Tuesday to Congress.

Charlotte Jacobson, Former Hadassah President, Dies

(JTA) — Charlotte Jacobson, who as Hadassah national president reclaimed the Jerusalem land where the organization’s flagship hospital now sits, has died.

Jacobson, who served as Hadassah president from 1964 to 1968, died last Friday in Florida.

Jewish Dems Petition: Drop Buchanan

 (JTA) — Jewish Democrats launched a petition calling on a columnist syndicate to drop Pat Buchanan.

The National Jewish Democratic Council said a recent column by the three-time presidential candidate questioning President Obama’s pick of Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court was intolerant because it made an issue of her Jewish faith.

Arson At German Synagogue

 (JTA) — Jewish institutions in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz are receiving increased protection following an arson attack on the synagogue in Worms.

Fires reportedly were set Sunday night at eight spots around the synagogue, which is one of the oldest in Germany, dating back to the year 1034. The Fire Department quickly extinguished the flames.

There was some damage; no one was injured.

Police reported finding eight copies of a letter at the scene that read, “Until you give the Palestinians peace, we will not give you peace.”

Chomsky To Address Palestinians Via Remote

 The American linguistic scholar Noam Chomsky, who was barred from entering Israel Sunday to give a lecture at Birzeit University in the West Bank, planned to give the lecture instead by videoconference from Amman. Al Jazeera planned to televise it live.

Burger King Leaving Israel

(JTA) — Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce ... and everything else. Israel’s 55 Burger King fast food restaurants, some of which are kosher, will soon close and reopen as Israeli Burger Ranch restaurants, the Israeli business daily Globes reported.

Orgad Holdings, the company that owns franchise rights to Burger King in Israel and the full owner of the Burger Ranch chain, made the announcement this week. Burger Ranch operates 52 outlets in Israel.

Arab Leaders: We’ll Boycott Summit If Lieberman attends

(JTA) — Arab leaders have threatened to boycott a European Union summit if Israel’s foreign minister attends.

A defiant Avigdor Lieberman insisted, however, that he will attend the Mediterranean Summit in Barcelona on June 7 in spite of the threats, which are being led by Egypt and Syria.

“I intend to, and I will be there,” Lieberman told Israel Radio. “We’re not forcing ourselves on anyone and we’re not forcing anyone else to come.”
