Death Camp Guard Demjanjuk Found Guilty Of War Crimes

BERLIN (JTA) -- A Munich court has found John Demjanjuk guilty of war crimes, and sentenced the 91-year-old former autoworker to five years in prison.

Thursday's verdict came after 93 court days, including deeply affecting testimony from Dutch survivors and their kin, and monologues by Demjanjuk's chief attorney, Ulrich Busch, who claimed his client was just as much a victim of Germany as any Jew.

Reacting to the early news, Jewish leaders expressed gratitude to the court.

Obama to Deliver New Muslim World Speech

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- President Obama reportedly is planning a new speech to the Muslim world that would call for a rejection of Islamic militancy.

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that the White House is planning for such a speech within the next two weeks, just as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to roll out proposals for reviving peace talks with the Palestinians in a meeting with Obama and in a speech to the U.S. Congress.

Israel Cancels Residency Status of Thousands of Palestinians

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel canceled the residency status of 140,000 Palestinians, allegedly without warning, the daily Haaretz reported.

A document obtained by Haaretz, following a request filed under the Freedom of Information Law by a human rights organization, shows that the residency status of 140,000 West Bank Palestinians were canceled between 1967 and 1994, shortly after the signing of the Oslo Accords.

Barak Presents Plan for Israeli-Palestinian Agreement

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak presented a plan for an agreement with the Palestinians.

The points could shed some light on the plan that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will present when he speaks to a joint session of the U.S. Congress later this month.

Israel will take "brave steps" and "make difficult decisions" for peace, Barak said Tuesday night at a reception for soldiers at the military's headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Tony Kushner to Receive CUNY Honorary Degree After All

(JTA) -- Trustees of the City University of New York's approved an honorary degree for playwright Tony Kushner, reversing an earlier decision.

The executive committee of the CUNY board of trustees voted Monday night to award Kushner an honorary doctorate during commencement ceremonies next month. The committee can reverse decisions of the full board.

Half of Democratic Senators Urge P.A. Aid Cut-Off

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Half the Democratic caucus in the U.S. Senate urged President Obama to suspend assistance to the Palestinian Authority unless Hamas recognizes Israel and renounces terrorism.

"It is imperative for you to make clear to President Abbas that Palestinian Authority participation in a unity government with an unreformed Hamas will jeopardize its relationship with the United States, including its receipt of U.S. aid," said the letter sent May 6 to Obama and signed by 27 Democratic senators.

Israelis Observe National Memorial Day

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- With a minute-long siren and moment of silence in memory of its war dead, Israel began its observance of Memorial Day, or Yom Hazikaron.

The annual observance of Remembrance Day for Israel's Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism is in memory of the nearly 23,000 men and women who have fallen in battle for the State of Israel and the some 2,500 other Israelis who have been victims of terrorist attacks.

Pelosi Delegation Meets With Netanyahu

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A delegation of Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives led by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the minority leader, arrived in Israe and met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahul.

The sides discussed "U.S.-Israel relations and regional security issues," said a statement Sunday, after the delegation arrived.

Kabbalah Centre Faces Federal Probe

(JTA) -- The Los Angeles-based Kabbalah Centre is under investigation by the Internal Revenue Service's criminal division.

The probe reportedly also involves two charities that are connected with Madonna, the nonprofit center’s most high-profile celebrity supporter. The Los Angeles Times reported that the Internal Revenue Service is looking into whether funds were diverted for the personal use of the Berg family, which has run the Kabbalah Centre for more than 40 years.
