That’s the message some top Democratic Jewish figures are promoting to push back against the notion that Obama is out of step with the pro-Israel and Jewish communities.

Cantor: Weiner Should Resign

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the U.S. House of Representatives majority leader, called on Congressman Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) to resign.
Cantor's call Tuesday came a day after Weiner admitted to having innapropriate Internet relationships and lying about a lewd photo posted to his Twitter account.

"I don't condone his activity. And I think he should resign," Cantor said Tuesday after a Chamber of Commerce luncheon, the Charlottesville Daily Progress reported.

Joe Lieberman to Attend Glenn Beck Rally

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) plans to attend a Glenn Beck rally in Jerusalem.

"The idea of the 'Restoring Courage' gathering in Jerusalem is an important idea and a very constructive one at a very important time for Israel," Lieberman said in a video posted on the right wing talk show provocatuer's website this week. "It's not against anybody or any group, it's to stand with Israel at a time when a lot of the rest of the world is attempting to delegitimize Israel."

The Jerusalem rally is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Santa Monica Anti-Circumcision Backer Drops Ballot Measure Bid

(JTA) -- The main backer of a ballot measure to ban circumcision in Santa Monica has dropped the effort over its perceived attack on religious freedom.

Jena Troutman told the Jewish Journal Monday afternoon that she would withdraw the proposed ballot initiative to prohibit "Genital Cutting of Male Minors," which she submitted to the Santa Monica City Clerk on May 19, the newspaper reported on its website.

Congressman Weiner Admits 'Inappopriate' Conduct

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) acknowledged inappropriate internet relationships with at least six women but said he would not resign or get divorced.

Weiner, who represents central Queens, the Rockaways and parts of Brooklyn, said he had lied last week when he denied sending a lewd underwear photo to a 21-year-old college student over Twitter and claimed that his account had been hacked.

30,000 March in New York’s Celebrate Israel Parade

(JTA) -- Thousands of New Yorkers participated in the annual Celebrate Israel Parade, which marched up Fifth Avenue amid a sea of blue-and-white flags.

The crowd was estimated at about 30,000 for the parade that was led by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, accompanied by Israeli Minister of Information and Diaspora Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Michael Oren, and Israel’s Consul General in New York Ido Aharoni.

Israeli Troops Fire on Palestinians at Syrian Border, Killing 4

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- At least four Palestinians were killed and nine wounded after hundreds of protesters massed on Israel's border with Syria on the Golan Heights.

The violence came Sunday after hundreds of Palestinians from Syria gathered at the border to mark Naksa Day, or the Setback, marking the beginning 44 years ago of the 1967 Six-Day War.

Israeli soldiers and border control police used tear gas and fired their weapons in the air and then at protesters feet to break up the threatening crowds on the border.

White House Posts Defense of its Israel Policies

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The White House website posted a defense of President Obama's Israel record, and several prominent Jewish Democrats penned Op-Eds defending his policies.

"President Obama: Advancing Israel's Security and Supporting Peace," which appeared online on Friday, addressed the controversy over the president's call in a May 19 Middle East policy speech for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations to based on 1967 lines, with mutually agreed swaps.

Jewish Agency to Close For Two Weeks to Save Money

NEW YORK (JTA) -- The Jewish Agency for Israel will close for two weeks over the summer and deduct several days' pay from employees' paychecks in a bid to close a budget gap of some $3.5 million.

The deal was worked out between the agency, which is one of the two main overseas conduits for money from the Jewish Federations of North America, and its employees union as an alternative to laying off 50 workers, the Jewish Agency said in an announcement Thursday. As part of the agreement, the union also will contribute $500,000 to the agency's budget.

Bibi Warns Protesters Planning New Border Breach

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Palestinian protesters planning to breach Israel's borders again will be halted, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu, speaking Thursday evening at a conference in Jerusalem, said Syria and Iran and the Hezbollah and Hamas terrorist groups are behind the planned mass protests planned for Sunday.
