Morton Klein was overwhelmingly re-elected president of the Zionist Organization of America during the organization’s convention in Philadelphia yesterday.

Klein, 66, said the landslide win was a “clear repudiation of the false and outlandish claims of my opponent, and it was a mandate for the work I do at the ZOA.”

Schumer: Don't Return Stolen Jewish Treasures To Iraq

Saying that the treasure trove of Jewish artifacts found by American troops in Baghdad in 2003 “were stolen” from the Iraqi Jewish community, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called on the State Department not to return them to Iraq.

Under an agreement with the Bush administration at the time, the more than 2,700 artifacts – including partial Torah parchments and ancient prayer books –were to be returned to Iraq by June of next year after being restored and preserved by the National Archives in Washington. The National Archives plans to exhibit some of them in the near future.

For the first time since the conviction of all 31 people arrested in connection with the defrauding of $57.3 million from the Claims Conference, the organization’s board will meet July 9 to discuss its next steps – and it has decided to keep the meeting closed to the public.

Despite requests from the New York Jewish Week and the Forward , the board chairman, Julius Berman, said in a statement:

Jewish Week Wins Six Awards From American Jewish Press Association

The Jewish Week took home six awards for excellence in Jewish journalism from the American Jewish Press Association's annual banquet in Philadelphia Wednesday.

The awards included first and second place honors in both the new and feature categories in the annual Simon Rockower contest, as well as first place honors for best personality profile and special sections.
