$3.4 Million In Homeland Security Funds To Protect Area Jewish Institutions

A wide range of Jewish organizations and institutions will benefit from $3.4 million in security funding secured for the greater New York area from the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). The program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The agencies include synagogues of several denominations, volunteer ambulance chapters, several Chabad centers, a JCC on Long Island and numerous area yeshivas and day schools.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, keynote speaker at Yeshiva University’s 87th annual Hanukkah convocation at the Waldorf-Astoria, was impressed how the university’s Center for the Jewish Future (CJF) engages in the spirit of tikkun olam.

She said graduate Josh Teitcher spent a summer in Israel with Counterpoint Israel—a CJF initiative for students to help local youth connect to Jewish values—and changed the life one young boy named Yitzchak.

There was once a time when a trip on Route 17 was one in which the mom or dad would tell the city child, "Look at the cows!" Those days are almost over, killed by a combination of thoughtless legislation, poor regional leadership, and economic deflation that has forced one farmer after another in the region to sell the family farm, or relocate.

Gillibrand: Protect Jewish Cemeteries Of Europe

The desecration, vandalism and redevelopment of Jewish cemeteries in Europe has prompted Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) to ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to press local governments abroad to preserve those sites.

In a letter Tuesday to Clinton, Gillibrand said she was acting on behalf of constituents who have expressed concern “about the threats faced by historic cemeteries, such as those in Lithuania, Poland and Malta.”
