WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The recent Middle East turmoil has sharpened Israeli needs for tangible security guarantees in exchange for concessions to the Palestinians, Dennis Ross said.
Ross, President Obama’s top Middle East adviser, told the Anti-Defamation League’s annual leadership conference in Washington on Monday that security guarantees sought by Israel toward a peace deal with the Palestinians were critical, “particularly during a time of change.”
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates arrived in Israel, where he is expected to press Israel and the Palestinians to restart peace talks in the wake of increased unrest.
Gates, who landed in Israel Thursday morning, less than a day after a bomb attack in central Jerusalem and following days of attacks between Israel and Gaza, is in the region assessing the U.S. posture after a wave of uprisings has shaken some regimes and supplanted others.

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), the chairwoman of the U.S. House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee and other Congress members.
