Selected line, already popular in Israel, hits U.S.
Carmel, the award-winning Israeli winery founded in 1882, has brought its popular line of Carmel Selected mevushal wines to the U.S. Already Israel’s biggest-selling brand, the line is available in three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon; Sauvignon Blanc; and a Riesling/Chenin Blanc Blend. Priced at $10.99 and under, the bottles are also a budget-friendly offering.
Today, Israeli wines are widely recognized for their quality, even outside the kosher marketplace. But Carmel was established long before Israel wines were trendy: at the turn of the 19th century, when it was started by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, owner of Chateau Lafite in Bordeaux.
“In the last ten years, Israeli wines have really developed,” said Dalia Sonnenfeld-Mandelman, Carmel’s managing director. “As Israel’s largest winery, we are proud to have been able to play a significant role in this transition.”
Historically, mevushal wines, which are heat-pasteurized, had been dismissed by wine aficionados who claimed that the process muted the wine’s delicate flavors. But producers of this type of wine assert that pasteurization technology has become so advanced that any damage done to the wine’s nuances is greatly reduced.
“We focus on making wines which reflect the Mediterranean terroir and respect the fruit we harvest,” said Lior Lacser, Carmel’s chief winemaker. “The wines are made in a state-of-the-art facility, which enables us to control each and every aspect of the winemaking process, and to make wines that are well balanced.”
