Twelve percent of Americans harbor deeply anti-Semitic attitudes, according to a poll conducted by the Anti-Defamation League timed for release at the centennial meeting of its national commission in Manhattan this week.
Conservative commentator Glenn Beck caused a stir at the National Rifle Association's convention by presenting an image of Mayor Michael Bloomberg giving a Nazi-like salute.
In his address to the gun lobby, Beck complained about Bloomberg's efforts to curb illegal guns and impose other controversial health measures in New York City, then presented the image as a joke, suggesting that the mayor's new motto for the Big Apple is "you will love New York."

The day Eric Schaefer learned that a .233 caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle — a type of weapon he owned — was used to kill 26 people in Newtown, Conn., he sold his rifle to local law enforcement near his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Schaefer, a 40-year-old commercial real estate agent, says he has been hit by an unshakable feeling of shame, and he no longer wants his two children exposed to the many weapons he owns for sporting purposes — guns he keeps locked up and away from the house.
As we all know by now, this weekend’s tragic shooting rampage in Arizona has not only stirred up much partisan finger-pointing about inflammatory rhetoric but highlighted yet again the utter wackiness of our gun-crazy culture (hold your angry comments NRA supporters: I’m unabashedly liberal on gun control and see no reason any civilian, much less a schizophrenic, should have access to a semiautomatic rifle).
But the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who identifies as Jewish but is not Jewish according to the traditional “matrilineal descent” definition, is also shining a spotlight on the “who is a Jew” debate. Giffords, 40, is the daughter of a Jewish father and Christian Scientist mother who raised her in both traditions; according to JTA, for the past decade (following her first visit to Israel) she has identified exclusively as Jewish, and she belongs to a Reform congregation.
