Rabbi Jack Moline, the well-known spiritual leader of Agudas Achim Congregation in Alexandria, Va., and national co-chair of Rabbis for Obama, has decided to leave the pulpit and become the executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council.

David Harris is leaving his job as president of the National Jewish Democratic Council.

"With the confidence of knowing that I’ve accomplished key goals here at NJDC that are central to our mission, I’m very much looking forward to new professional challenges and directions," Harris said in a statement released Wednesday after he announced his decision to the body's board.

Harris has helmed the group since 2009 and has worked to counter Republican efforts depicting President Obama as unfriendly to Israel.

Out on a high note: Harris moving on.

Sheldon Adelson's $60 million defamation lawsuit against the National Jewish Democratic Council describes extensive efforts by his representatives, including Alan Dershowitz, to talk the group into apologizing for intimating that the casino magnate approved of prostitution.

The 16-page lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in New York.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was in critical condition after being shot in the head.

Giffords was outside one of her signature "Congress at your corner" events outside a Safeway in Tucson, the district she represented, when a gunman approached and shot her in the head.

The gunman, identified by media as Jared Lee Loughner, shot 17 people, killing six of them, including a 9-year old girl and a federal judge, John Roll. The gunman was tackled and arrested.

START treaty: Good for the Jews?

Ratification of the renewed START treaty is one of the hottest issues facing the lame duck session of Congress and a rising priority for the Obama administration as GOP resistance grows.

It's also a priority for some analysts who say renewing the treaty is critical in bolstering the Kremlin's support for U.S.-led efforts to keep Iran from going nuclear.

Now some Jewish groups have weighed in.
