Thanks to Sonny Bono, the UJA-Federation stands to earn additional millions of dollars from the lyrics of the great Broadway songwriter Lorenz Hart.

Sculpting A New Salt Lake City

02/22/2002 | by Steve Lipman | Staff Writer

Visitors to Salt Lake City during the Winter Games have seen the first signs of the city’s effort to change its public face — tree-lined mediums on major streets, a light rail system, more parks.

Trading Terrorists

02/22/2002 | by Debra Nussbaum Cohen | Staff Writer

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
There’s no Cal Ripkin, Jr. card, either, in the latest trading card set to hit the market. Instead, Terrorist Trading Cards tout the likes of Osama bin Laden, Yasir Arafat, Saddam Hussein and Ayman Al-Zawahiri, bin Laden’s No. 2.
Bordered in funereal black, the cards picture the terrorist in question on the front and, on the reverse, list stats including height, weight and languages spoken. A précis of the terrorist’s career focuses on his American targets.

The World Of Purim

02/22/2002 | by Debra Nussbaum Cohen | Staff Writer

Around the world Jews read from the same scroll on Purim — Megillat Esther — but there, similarities between the celebrations often end. From Algeria to Zimbabwe, Jews have some uniquely indigenous Purim traditions.
They’ve been collected by the Hadassah International Research Institute on Jewish Women in a new volume, “Esther’s Legacy,” which includes recipes, poems and songs.

Satmars Protest Israeli ‘Oppression’

02/15/2002 | by Adam Dickter | Staff Writer

Citing several grievances against the Israeli government and police, between 10,000 and 15,000 Satmar chasidim protested Tuesday outside the Israeli Consulate on Second Avenue.
“The issue was protesting the oppression of religious Jews and the religious way of life in Israel,” said Rabbi David Niederman, director of the United Jewish Council in Williamsburg and a member of the Satmars’ Central Rabbinical Congress, which sponsored the rally.
