A wide range of Jewish organizations and institutions will receive $3.4 million in security funding secured for the greater New York area from the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP). The program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Steve “Shlomo” Zakheim, a businessman and Orthodox community activist who was a longtime member of the Flatbush Hatzolah emergency medical service, died of cancer Sept. 5 in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. A resident of Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, he was 60.
The Brownstone, a recently launched Jewish educational effort based in a six-story building in the East Village, was closed temporarily last week because of an unexpected building code violation, but is expected to reopen by the start of the Sukkot holiday on Sept. 18.
