Gov’t Pokes Holes In Reimer’s Story

08/21/1998 | by Steve Lipman
 | Staff Writer

He buttoned his sweater, straightened his cuffs, took a gulp of bottled water, glanced around the courtroom and began to explain why, after 46 years in the United States, he should not lose his citizenship. “I didn’t do anything to anybody,” Jack Reimer said.

Schumer: Stressing Record, Not Money

08/21/1998 | by Eric J. Greenberg | Staff Writer

He’s got experience. He’s got money. But for a Brooklyn guy and Harvard graduate who is known to journalists as a media hound, Charles Schumer is working feverishly to raise his name recognition across New York State among loyal Democratic voters.
The nine-term congressman, you see, wants to be the Democratic candidate to run against Sen. Alfonse D’Amato next November.

Hikind Jumping To GOP?

08/21/1998 | by Eric J. Greenberg | Staff Writer

Democratic State Assemblyman Dov Hikind says he wants to be a congressman. A Republican congressman. Hikind, a lifelong Democrat with a penchant for endorsing Republican candidates, said this week he is seriously considering throwing his hat into the ring on the Republican line for the Ninth Congressional District seat being vacated by longtime Democratic Rep. Charles Schumer, who represents parts of southern Brooklyn and Queens.
I’m excited about it,” Hikind said. “I will definitely make a decision by next week.”

A Primary Primer

08/19/1998 | by Adam Dickter | Staff Writer

The hottest races in Brooklyn this year concern a variety of different offices and a multitude of issues. But almost all of them have one thing in common: The Jewish names on the ballots.
In races from Congress to Assembly to Civil Court judge, the bumper crop of Jewish candidates for election and re-election reflects the boroughís bustling Jewish population and its growing political influence.

Bearing Witness

08/14/1998 | by Steve Lipman | Staff Writer

One testified with his words. Samuel Hilton, a Holocaust survivor, sat in the witness chair and described how he lived through the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto.
Others testified with their presence.
A dozen recent emigres from the former Soviet Union, also Holocaust survivors, occupied the last two rows of the spectators’ section and listened reverently to Hilton. Most wore Jewish stars, made from yellow paper, on their blouses.
