Double Infusion

06/19/1998 | by Stewart Ain | Staff Writer

There will be more money for AIDS prevention, breast cancer counseling, domestic violence programming and to work with former Soviet immigrants, the executive vice president and CEO of the Federation Employment and Guidance Service revealed this week.
The FEGS executive, Al Miller, said the new money was realized after strong investments made it possible to use the earnings to pay employee pension premiums.

No Cakewalk For McCall

06/19/1998 | by Adam Dickter | Staff Writer

Initially thought to be a throw-away as far as the Republicans are concerned, the contest for state comptroller is shaping up to be a horse race after all with the nomination of Nassau County’s Bruce Blakeman to challenge Democrat H. Carl McCall.
The first African American elected to statewide office in New York, McCall was seen by many observers as a virtual shoo-in for re-election.

Dominance And Submission

06/19/1998 | by Eric J. Greenberg | Staff Writer

The other day, the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant group in America, declared that wives should “submit themselves graciously to their husband’s leadership.”

“My husband tells me that all the time — ‘can’t you be a little more submissive’ ” — chuckled political consultant Suri Kasirer when asked about the newest development in American gender politics.

Hikind’s Fallback Option: Run His Wife?

06/19/1998 | by Lawrence Cohler-Esses | Staff Writer

Assemblyman Dov Hikind, on trial for corruption, has told intimates that he is considering running his wife, Shoshana, in his place this fall if he is forced to withdraw from his re-election campaign, Borough Park and Democratic Party sources have told The Jewish Week.
But according to one widely respected local leader, if Hikind is convicted on any of the federal felony charges, “The community would be less supportive [of such a move] than he might imagine.”

A Malka, If Not A Queen

06/12/1998 | Jonathan Mark | Associate Editor

The generation that took Bess Myerson’s Miss America coronation as their own, now wonders, when was it, exactly, that 1945 turned out to be more than 50 years ago? How old, then, are those who remember? Someone will say, “Bess Myerson. How do I know you? We met someplace. I know you from someplace. She’d say, “Well, I was on television ... ”“Yes!

Conservative Rabbis:Israel Blaming Us In Conversion Mess

06/12/1998 | by Stewart Ain | Staff Writer

The conversion issue has again surfaced in Israel, reigniting bitter animosities that were shelved during failed efforts to resolve the conflict. And unlike before, the non-Orthodox are blaming the Israeli government for the crisis.
