Not long after the 92nd Street Y was rewired last year (a nearly $1 million job that involved threading fiber optic, copper wire and coaxial cables throughout the 11-story, 70-year-old building) Elie Wiesel delivered a lecture in the first-floor auditorium that was transmitted on closed circuit throughout the building.
Even as Israelís anti-Orthodox propagandists keep exporting films like ìKadosh,î which depicts Orthodox rituals in a state of spiritual squalor, particularly with regard to women ó of course ó let it be known that there are newspapers, far from Israel, that treat traditional Judaism with respect bordering on admiration. For example, in California, The Sacramento Bee (Feb. 7) reports on Sacramento Jews joining in a nationwide mikveh revival.
Dr. Laura Schlesinger, whose top-rated radio show dishes out ìtough loveî for her callersí ìmoral dilemmas,î has come under increasing attack by gays of late. They are charging that her persistent critique of homosexuality is ìinviting gay children to see themselves as less than fully human.î
At issue, in part, is Judaismís views on homosexuality, which Dr. Laura, an observant Jew, cites as a source for her opinions, though rabbis are divided along denominational lines on the issue.

Gov. George W. Bush may be cruising toward the Republican nomination and a November showdown with Vice President Al Gore, but he is expected to face an uphill battle for Jewish support.
The persistent attacks on Bush and the GOP’s religious fundamentalist wing by Arizona Sen. John McCain seem to have backfired, energizing Bush forces in nine of 13 primary or caucus states. But the assault may have succeeded in redefining Bush as a tool of the party’s right wing, damaging his appeal to Jews in the general election.
With Democrat Al Gore's presidential candidacy surging, the Republican National Committee and its Jewish support group are hoping to erode his support among Jews and whites by linking him to the Rev. Al Sharpton.
"Al Sharpton is a racist anti-Semite with blood on his hands," said Chris Paulitz, a spokesman for the RNC in Washington who is gathering information on controversial Sharpton statements on behalf of national chairman Jim Nicholson. "He is the David Duke of the Democrat Party. Why has Al Gore and most of the Democrat Party embraced this hate-monger?"
A congregant in Rabbi David Hirsch’s synagogue approached him with a request one recent Shabbat after shacharit services: She wanted a new prayerbook, one with more-extensive commentaries.
Rabbi Hirsch, spiritual leader of the Fleetwood Synagogue in Mount Vernon for four years, was delighted. The veteran member of the congregation was part of the new Fleetwood Kollel, the first community kollel of its kind in Westchester.
