Friday morning, in the midst of what was literally a 24-hour news cycle, I awoke to a text from my mother: “I’m glad you’re not living in Cambridge anymore.”

Temple Emanu-el Kids' Program Highlights Childhood Shoah Stories

04/17/2013 | Steve Lipman | Staff Writer

Some religious school students at Temple Emanu-El heard a firsthand account of the Holocaust recently. And they saw the New York premiere of a German-made Holocaust documentary.

During two Yom HaShoah speeches at the Upper East Side Reform synagogue, Holocaust survivor Leslie Schwartz talked about his wartime experiences (the rest of his family died in Auschwitz) and showed a documentary about his life produced by a Bavarian  television channel (an English-language version was recently released at his request).

Rabbi Mayer Zarchi recognized the loud blasts he heard, and the smell of burnt flesh in the air, when he stepped out of a café in downtown Boston Monday afternoon.

He had been near a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv several years ago. “It was a very similar sound.”

Who Bombed Boston? The Word For Now Is Caution

04/16/2013 | Ron Kampeas | JTA

The day after the Boston Marathon bombing, President Obama called it an “act of terrorism.” What kind of terrorism, no one was ready to say -- a caution that derives from years of wrongful speculation that on occasion has ruined innocent lives.

Hours after the attack Monday that killed three and injured scores, Obama in a television address refrained from using the word “terrorism.” He did use it Tuesday, but wrapped it deep in caveats.
