The Case For Teshuvah

09/18/1998 | by Eric J. Greenberg | Staff Writer

Like the biblical prophets Samuel and Nathan, who admonished their kings for sinning, the spiritual head of the Conservative movement found himself a lone Jewish voice in the nation this week following his daring call for President Clinton to resign.
Ismar Schorsch, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, last week thus became the first national Jewish religious figure to urge Clinton to quit because of the Monica Lewinsky scandal. He said the president’s moral authority has been “destroyed” and in effect cannot be recovered.

Joe Lieberman Blasts Clinton in Lewinsky Affair

09/11/1998 | James D. Besser | Washington Correspondent

Last week’s speech by Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) blasting President Bill Clinton’s behavior in the Monica Lewinsky affair has spurred new talk in Jewish political circles about a presidential resignation.

So far, it is just that — private talk. But several Jewish leaders say Lieberman’s tough speech — and a growing feeling in Washington that the administration is all but paralyzed — have dramatically changed Clinton’s standing in the Jewish world.

Russian Crisis Has Leaders Fearing Worst

09/04/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

American Jewish leaders, jarred by the accelerating economic and political chaos in Russia, are privately beginning to discuss contingency plans for coming to the aid of Russia’s vulnerable Jewish population.
Their concern is being fueled by rising panic among Jews who fear a wave of anti-Semitism as rubles evaporate into thin air and communists crank up their efforts to unseat President Boris Yeltsin.
But some wonder if Jewish communal institutions here are prepared for the consequences of a full-scale meltdown in Russia.

War of the Future is Here

08/28/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Washington — Jewish leaders applauded last week’s dramatic shift in U.S. policy in the fight against international terrorism, but many worried that the Clinton administration lacks the stamina and political daring needed to lead the American people into what is certain to be a long, ugly and costly war.

Strange Brew: Judaism’s Cup Of Joe

08/25/1998 | Jonathan Mark | Associate Editor

In the days since Al Gore tapped Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, a new branch of Judaism has emerged. Sort of. It’s not Modern Orthodoxy, exactly. And it’s not right-wing Conservative, either.
Call it Liebermanism.
With all eyes trained on the expression of the Connecticut Democrat’s faith, the Jewish community, while still basking in the glow of a religious Jew on the Democratic ticket, is now trying to figure out where his level of observance fits in the continuum, and what it all means.
