Talking Tough with Mubarak

07/02/1999 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

A thaw in the frozen Mideast peace talks may be in the works as Ehud Barak puts the finishing touches on his new government, but it apparently hasn’t touched Egypt. That was apparent on Monday when a group of Jewish leaders held a chilly session with President Hosni Mubarak, here for a round of top-level meetings including a Thursday session with President Bill Clinton.
Several participants described the meeting as contentious, combative and frustrating.

Stalling for Time on Jerusalem Embassy

06/25/1999 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Wavering between pragmatism and principle, mainstream pro-Israel organizations have opted not to make a major issue — at least for now — over the Clinton administration decision to delay moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Synagogue Fires Forge Unity In Calif.

06/25/1999 | by Eric J. Greenberg | Staff Writer

In the wake of the worst attack on synagogues in the United States in at least two decades, federal investigators are feverishly tracking leads in last week’s coordinated firebombings of three of the five temples in Sacramento, Calif.
Meanwhile, an unprecedented outpouring of support continues to stream into the California state capital’s Jewish community from local citizens, national politicians and horrified American Jewish organizations, all vowing to help rebuild the severely damaged buildings torched in a pre-dawn raid last Friday by still unknown persons.

The Congressman is Jewish. So What?

06/22/1999 | James D. Besser | Washington Correspondent

Peter Deutsch had a problem. The House of Representatives was thrashing its way toward a historic vote on the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, and Deutsch, a congressman representing a heavily Jewish section of Broward County, Fla., suddenly found himself pursued by swarms of tenacious reporters.

Bullish on Memory

06/21/1999 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Leo Melamed says his life is like a movie — “Casablanca,” he suggested, with its harrowing escapes, hard-won transit permits and pervasive mood of threat. But it’s an updated “Casablanca,” filled with the high-tech tools of Melamed’s trade and the trappings of wealth he has acquired since his days on the run.
