New Power Awakens Old Group

The National Association of Jewish Legislators came to Washington this week for a meeting intended to breathe new life into the moribund group. And not a moment too soon: with the political balance shifting from the federal to the state level, a strong Jewish presence in state capitals around the country will be more important than ever, said some of the 25 delegates.“There is a seismic shift taking place, “ said Sen. Seymour Lachman, a Democratic member of the New York State Senate from Brooklyn.

Holocaust Assets Conference Veers From Focus On Money

Holocaust Assets Conference Veers From Focus On Money

This week’s Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets was originally planned to zero in on the rapidly expanding list of stolen Jewish property and the governments that have balked at returning it.
But growing unease among Jewish leaders over the relentless focus on property and not “moral restitution” forced planners to reshape the agenda for the four-day meeting, sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the State Department.

New Israel Aid May Be Hard Sell

New Israel Aid May Be Hard Sell

A parade of Israel officials has started lobbying Washington for new U.S. aid as compensation for the military redeployments mandated by last month’s Wye River agreement. But the high-dollar package could be a hard sell in Congress, where the new Republican leadership has vowed to make big tax cuts, not foreign policy, their top priority.

Supreme Court Opens Door to School Vouchers

11/13/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Door Opened For Vouchers

This week’s decision by the Supreme Court not to hear a case involving a pioneering school voucher program in Milwaukee postponed a judicial showdown over theconstitutionality of government aid to parochial institutions.
But there was widespread agreement that the move may send a signal to cities and states considering similar programs, which provide tax vouchers to parents who send their children to private or parochial schools, and to lower courts that are beginning to rule on such programs.
