Remembering Specter, ‘A Tough Jew’

10/16/2012 | Ron Kampeas | JTA
Sen. Arlen Specter: Wore his independence as a badge of honor. JTA

Washington — During his 30 years in the clubby confines of the U.S. Senate, Arlen Specter never lost his acerbic prosecutorial zeal, friends and associates say.

The insistent questions, the commitment to independence that made the longtime Pennsylvania senator a critical player in recent U.S. history, ultimately did in his career. In his 2010 bid for a sixth term, Specter lost the support of both Democrats and Republicans.

Sheriff Prevents Fistfight As Sherman-Berman Race In Ca. Gets Ugly

10/12/2012 | JTA

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) put his arm around the much older Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and challenged him to a physical fight during a heated debate.

The two Jewish Democrats, pitted against each other in a suburban Los Angeles district because of redistricting, have fought a bitter and expensive race.

The debate Thursday at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley grew heated when Sherman sought to push back against Berman's claims of leadership on a number of bills popular in the district.

A Guide To Living A Serious Jewish Life

10/11/2012 | Jonathan Mark | Associate Editor
The Conservative Movement's new guidebook is as vast and ambitious as a Russian novel, and as long.

At a time when denominational walls seem to be growing ever higher, the new religious guidebook from the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly is meant for all “contemporary Jews,” not necessarily just Conservative ones.
