WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The PLO office in Washington raised a flag for the first time.
"It's about time that this flag that symbolizes the struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination and statehood is raised in the United States," said Palestine Liberation Organization envoy Maen Areikat in a brief ceremony Tuesday outside its Dupont Circle offices. "We hope that this will help in the international efforts to provide recognition for the Palestinian state."
In Gedera, a predominantly Ethiopian town in central Israel, a group of college students from the University of Massachusetts began clearing a litter-strewn courtyard in the town center. Their goal: to plant a community garden in a little more than a week’s time.
As they tilled the soil, older Ethiopians who lived in the area began peering out their windows, watching curiously as the project unfolded. After some time, they came outside and began helping as well.
(JTA) -- A Baltimore Jewish day school will close its high school division at the end of the school year due to financial problems.
Yeshivat Rambam, which opened 10 years ago, announced Sunday that it would close its high schools for boys and girls while working to strengthen the enrollment and retention of its middle and elementary schools, as well as its kindergarten and early childhood programs, the Baltimore Jewish Times reported.

(JTA) -- A Jewish group garnered 10,000 signatures on a petition asking Fox News Channel to fire political commentator Glenn Beck.
Jewish Funds for Justice attempted to deliver the petition on Jan. 13 to the Manhattan headquarters of News Corp., Fox's parent company, run by Rupert Murdoch. Security would not let JFSJ president Simon Greer into the building, and so he pledged to mail in the petition.
