Strange Brew: Judaism’s Cup Of Joe

08/25/1998 | Jonathan Mark | Associate Editor

In the days since Al Gore tapped Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, a new branch of Judaism has emerged. Sort of. It’s not Modern Orthodoxy, exactly. And it’s not right-wing Conservative, either.
Call it Liebermanism.
With all eyes trained on the expression of the Connecticut Democrat’s faith, the Jewish community, while still basking in the glow of a religious Jew on the Democratic ticket, is now trying to figure out where his level of observance fits in the continuum, and what it all means.

Sex, Lies and Saddam Hussein

08/21/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Sex, Lies And Saddam

The possibility that the preoccupation with sex, lies and grand jury testimony is crippling the nation’s foreign apolicy apparatus has Jewish activists in Washington worried.
That concern mushroomed this week in the wake of President Bill Clinton’s dramatic confession of a “not appropriate” relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, and with the latest eruption by Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein.

The Activist Ambassador

08/14/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

The Activist Ambassador

Zalman Shoval is a man who understands challenges. From 1990 to 1993, he served as Israel’s top envoy to Washington during a time of enormous stress in the U.S.-Israel relationship. His tenure encompassed the bitter debate over loan guarantees for Israel; firefights with former Secretary of State James Baker; and the Gulf War, when Shoval’s calm demeanor as Israel’s top U.S. spokesman belied tough behind-the-scenes diplomacy over Israel’s role in the war against Iraq.

Iran Sanctions: Is Action on Russia Enough?

07/24/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Is Action On Russia Enough?

Pro-Israel groups are playing a cautious game of wait-and-see in response to last week’s dramatic developments in the battle over sanctions on Russian companies that contribute to Iran’s missile development program.
Facing an almost certain override of his veto of the Iran Missile Proliferation Sanctions Act, President Bill Clinton announced he would impose trade sanctions on seven of nine Russian companies accused of contributing to Iran’s weapons program.

John Roth, Holocaust Scholar, Quits Museum Under Fire

07/03/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Washington — The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum has suffered another embarrassing public relations setback that supporters say could leave the institution more vulnerable to political control.

John Roth, the Claremont McKenna College philosophy professor whose appointment as head of a new academic arm of the museum generated ferocious attacks from the right and unease among some mainstream Jewish leaders, stepped down Monday before assuming his duties.

Say the Right Thing

07/03/1998 | James Besser | Washington Correspondent

Say The Right Thing

Recent administration pressure on Israel may boost the Republican party’s prospects with Jewish voters — as long as GOP candidates learn to say the right things on Israel and moderate their language on social issues.
That was one conclusion of a major study by Republican pollster Frank Luntz for the National Jewish Coalition, the central group of Jewish Republicans.
