Gaza Cease-Fire Seen Solidifying U.S.-Israel Relations

UPDATE: Israel and Hamas reached an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire that took effect Wednesday afternoon. Both sides agreed to end rocket fire, and Israel agreed to ease border crossings into Gaza.

The cease-fire hammered out in Cairo to end rocket attacks between Hamas and Israel appears to have bolstered the stature of Egypt and solidified Israeli-U.S. relations, but few believe it will truly end hostilities.

Hackers attempted to launch more than 1 million cyberattacks against Israeli government websites over a 24-hour period from Sunday to Monday, with more than 1,000 sites being hacked, Israel Hayom reported.

The most prominent attacks were against military industry websites, during which hackers apparently tried extracting information about the Iron Dome missile defense system, as well as other military systems.

Witness: What Do You Do When The War Comes to Jerusalem?

11/19/2012 | Michele Chabin | Israel Correspondent
The Klein family in Beersheva sleep in their home's reinforced room every night. Michele Chabin

In the past, every time Israel fought a war, we Jerusalemites took comfort in the belief that no Arab leader in his right mind would risk hitting Al Aqsa mosque with a rocket.

That’s how we interpreted the fact that Saddam Hussein, who pummeled Tel Aviv with Scud missiles during the 1991 Gulf War, seemed to deliberately steer clear of the Holy City.

How naïve we were.

Rocket Strikes Reported South Of Jerusalem

11/16/2012 | JTA

Air-raid sirens were sounded in Jerusalem on Friday, marking the first time the holy city has been targeted by rocket fire from Gaza.

Initial reports from Israeli television said three rockets had landed in the area of Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem.

The alarms come just a day after Gaza rockets landed on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. Previously, Palestinian rocket fire has been largely confined to an area closer to the Gaza Strip, leaving Israel's major population centers largely unscathed.

Three Israelis were killed when a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip hit their apartment in southern Israel.

The rocket that struck the Kiryat Malachi apartment on Thursday morning -- one of at least 140 rockets fired from Gaza since the assassination late Wednesday afternoon of the Hamas military chief in Gaza, Ahmed Jabari -- also injured a baby girl and a 4-year-old boy. A second building in Kiryat Malachi also was hit.
