Obama: Missile Fire From Gaza Must Stop First

11/19/2012 | JTA

President Obama told the Egyptian and Turkish leaders that a resolution to the Gaza-Israel violence must begin with an end to rocket fire into Israel.

"If we’re serious about wanting to resolve this situation and create a genuine peace process, it starts with no more missiles being fired into Israel’s territory, and that then gives us the space to try to deal with these longstanding conflicts that exist," Obama said Sunday at a news conference in Bangkok, the first leg of his tour of Asian countries.

Baltimore — The Jewish federation movement, like much of the organized community, has put great emphasis in recent years on youth, trying many ways to attract that elusive segment of the community.

But the most dramatic session of this year’s General Assembly (GA) of the Jewish Federations of North America, held here this week, was a discussion between two men, one 84 and the other 64, about an event that took place almost 25 years ago.

11/09/2012 | JTA

-- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one of 13 world leaders that President Obama called to thank for congratulatory messages following his reelection.

"In each call, he thanked his counterpart for their friendship and partnership thus far and expressed his desire to continue close cooperation moving ahead," the White House said Thursday in a statement.

In his own statement, Netanyahu said he told Obama that his reelection was "a vote of confidence in your leadership."

The Hurricane They Almost Named Israel

Tropical Storm Ivo, which would have been named Israel had it reached hurricane status. NASA

While Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on East Coast Jewish communities, another storm 11 years ago made serious political waves in the Jewish world.

It’s not unusual for Jewish organizations to clash with United Nations agencies over issues related to Israel. But in 2001, Jewish groups’ concern for Israel drew them into an unusual battle with the UN over the naming of a hurricane.
