After years in which rabbis forbade any sort of gender selection at conception, a recent Halachic (Jewish legal) ruling has now deemed it permissible to intervene and select the gender of a fetus in certain situations. The ruling was to be officially issued at a conference last week organized by the Puah Institute, which offers fertility treatments in line with Jewish law.
These are the two facets of the "fiscal cliff" debate in Washington, as President Obama and Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives wrangle over what mix of cuts and revenue increases should be part of a deficit reduction deal.
Jewish organizations have been vocal during the budget debate, but some key groups are focusing their advocacy mostly on the threat of cuts to programs they hold dear while staying out of the heated fight over taxes.
Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel doesn't appear to take the threat posed by Iran seriously enough to be defense secretary, Conn. Sen. Joseph Lieberman said on Sunday morning.
"Chuck Hagel has consistently been against economic sanctions to try to change the behavior of the Islamist regime, the radical regime in Tehran, which is the only way to do it, short of war," Lieberman told Candy Crowley on CNN's State of the Union. "
A leading pro-Israel political action committee urged its members to prevent Chuck Hagel from being nominated defense secretary, while a group of former U.S. diplomats endorsed him.
"The most outstanding thing about the Senator's record on the threats America and its allies face is the consistent solicitude he has shown toward Iran and the terrorist organizations and states it funds: Hezbollah, Hamas, and Syria," reads the model letter sent to members by NORPAC, the New Jersey-based committee.
