Knesset committee to discuss J Street

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An Israeli Knesset committee will hold a hearing on the activities of J Street.

The Knesset Immigration, Absorption and Public Diplomacy Committee said Wednesday that the hearing on J Street, which calls itself a "pro-Israel, pro-peace" organization, will be held as soon as next week.

Americans for Peace Now said it was outraged by the hearing.

Kissinger calls for Pollard clemency

(JTA) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has called for the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Kissinger sent a letter to President Obama requesting that he commute Pollard's sentence to time served.

Pollard was a U.S. Navy analyst when he passed classified information to Israel. He has been in prison since 1985.

40 dead as northern Israel burns

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- At least 40 people have been killed in a massive brush fire in northern Israel.

The fire, which broke out Thursday morning in the Carmel Mountains near Haifa, has destroyed thousands of acres of natural forest. Winds and dry conditions helped to send the fire out of control.

On Eve of Washington Talks: Barak, Abbas Hold Secret Meeting

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak reportedly met secretly with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on the eve of peace talks.

Barak met with Abbas Sunday night in Amman, Israeli media reported, hours after meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah at his palace. Barak reportedly returned to Israel to brief Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu between the meetings.

Shots fired from Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv

(JTA) - Shots reportedly were fired from inside the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv. Israeli media have reported that a Palestinian from Ramallah barricaded himself inside the building Tuesday night with two hostages. He allegedly was threatening to “kill any Jews” who enter, according to Haaretz.

The streets around the embassy have been closed. Embassy staff reportedly have prevented police and medical personnel from entering the building.
