WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Activists for the Zionist Organization of America lobbied Congress to consider military action against Iran.
In more than 100 meetings with members of Congress on Wednesday, the ZOA said hundreds of its activists also asked the lawmakers to defund the Palestinian Authority, press the U.S. embassy issue and enshrine anti-Jewish discrimination safeguards in education legislation.
Thirty lawmakers addressed the group's luncheon, the ZOA said.
LOS ANGELES (JTA) – A 15-year old Orthodox Jewish girl has become the youngest elected public representative in Los Angeles.
Rachel Lester was elected last week to the South Robertson Neighborhood Council, besting her opponent, a college-educated family man, with a lop-sided vote of 144 to 13.
The 90 neighborhood councils in Los Angeles are official municipal bodies, which serve as advisory boards to the L.A. City Council and as liaison between the average citizen and the municipal government.
NEW YORK (JTA) -- The U.S. Department of Justice again has declined to intervene in the sentencing of a convicted kosher meat executive.
Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer wrote in a letter Monday that concerns about the sentencing of former Agriprocessors executive Sholom Rubashkin were best raised with the presiding judge in northern Iowa, Linda Reade, or with local federal prosecutors.
