Israel postpones deportation of foreign workers’ children

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel has postponed the deportation of hundreds of children of foreign workers by several months.

Interior Minister Eli Yishai announced his decision Wednesday, saying he did not want to disrupt the children's school year, according to reports.

"I have instructed the enforcement regarding families with children learning in Israeli schools to be postponed by a number of months," Yishai said.

Ketubah prepared for Britain’s newest royal couple

(JTA) -- A British artist has prepared a ketubah, or Jewish marriage contract, for Britain’s Prince William and his fiancee, Kate Middleton.

Michael Horton, who has Israeli citizenship, designed the ketubah for the couple’s April 29 wedding, according to The Associated Press. The language, in Hebrew and English, has been altered to be egalitarian and nonreligious. Neither the prince nor Middleton are Jewish.

Knesset committee to discuss J Street

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- An Israeli Knesset committee will hold a hearing on the activities of J Street.

The Knesset Immigration, Absorption and Public Diplomacy Committee said Wednesday that the hearing on J Street, which calls itself a "pro-Israel, pro-peace" organization, will be held as soon as next week.

Americans for Peace Now said it was outraged by the hearing.

Kissinger calls for Pollard clemency

(JTA) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has called for the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Kissinger sent a letter to President Obama requesting that he commute Pollard's sentence to time served.

Pollard was a U.S. Navy analyst when he passed classified information to Israel. He has been in prison since 1985.

40 dead as northern Israel burns

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- At least 40 people have been killed in a massive brush fire in northern Israel.

The fire, which broke out Thursday morning in the Carmel Mountains near Haifa, has destroyed thousands of acres of natural forest. Winds and dry conditions helped to send the fire out of control.
