For the third straight year, Oracle's Larry Ellison is the world's richest Jew, according to Forbes magazine's annual world billionaires list for 2013.

The sofware magnate was among five Jews in the top 25 on the list released Monday. Seventeen Israelis were among this year's record 1,426 billionaires -- 200 more than in 2012.

Ellison was No. 5 overall with a net worth of $43 billion. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was No. 13 with $27 billion, followed among the Jews by casino magnate and philanthropist Sheldon Adelson at No. 15 with $26.5 billion, and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, at 20 and 21, with $23 billion and $22.8 billion.

Four of the Israelis are new to the list: tech investor Shaul Shani, with a net worth of $3 billion; diamond baron Dan Gertler, $2.2 billion; and oil prospector Tzadik Bino and pharmaceuticals investor Mori Arkin, both with $1.05 billion. Businessman Idan Ofer ranked highest of the Israelis, placing at No. 182 with $6.2 billion. Ofer's brother Eyal was four spots lower with $6 billion.

According to estimates by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, there are about 1 milion Jews in the United States living at or below the poverty level, or about one in six.

Did you know that Israel has more names on the Forbes list on a per capita basis than Canada, or even the US? Do the math. So why is the US still sending billions of dollars in defense subsidies to Israel and cutting meals on meals to infirm home bound Americans? Wealthy Jews have the financial ability to help Israel if they want to. Larry Ellison, alone, could cover the entire bill for over 10 years. As Mammie (Hattie McDaniel) might have said: "It just ain't fittin, it just ain't right."

Israel would probably not need foreign financial assistance at all if its religious (Haredi) simply went to work and paid taxes like their secular neighbors, instead of demanding government handouts.

For the time being, AIPAC, the lobby group that promotes Israeli interests in Congress, is powerful enough to get its way. But that won't always be the case.

In 1900, over 16% of Frankfurt's Jewish households had income of over 12,500 marks annually vs under 2% for Catholics and under 5% for Protestants. But starting in 1941, the rich Jews were loaded into box cars along with the poor ones for resettlement in the East.

If you are wondering where I found this obscure income data, it comes from the German book "Hinaus aus dem Ghetto...Juden in Frankfurt am Main 1800-1950." The Germans were as anal about collecting data based on religion as Americans are when it comes to race.
