Washington JCRC to National Geographic: You’re All Wet on Water Exhibit

05/26/2010

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A prominent Jewish umbrella organization rebuked National Geographic for "singling out and negatively portraying the State of Israel" in an exhibit dedicated to water.

The Jewish Community Relations Council sent a letter to National Geographic regarding an exhibition running through June 13 at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City, Calif.

Terror Attack Averted on Tel Aviv Bus

05/26/2010

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israeli police were searching the Tel Aviv area for a man and woman who reportedly tried to carry out a terror attack on a bus on Dizengoff Street.

A man sitting in the back of the bus wearing a heavy coat on a hot day yelled "slaughter the Jews" in Arabic, while a woman in the front of the bus tried to prevent the frightened passengers from getting off the bus, according to reports.

Pro-Israel, With Questions: Beinart Pins his Thesis to the Synagogue Door

05/26/2010 | Ron Kampeas | JTA

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Peter Beinart attends an Orthodox synagogue, once edited The New Republic (the closest thing to a smicha for Jewish policy wonks) and backed Sen. Joe Lieberman’s quixotic 2004 bid to become the first Jewish president.

Which is why he’s always been counted among the Washington pundits who defend Israel, Zionism and the right of American Jews to lobby for a strong U.S.-Israel relationship.

Beinart also frets about how Jewish his kids will be.

Grant Pushes Historic Partnership of Seminaries

05/25/2010

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Spurred by a major grant from one of the largest Jewish foundations, the rabbinical seminaries of three major synagogue movements are forging a groundbreaking partnership to train Jewish educators.

The Jim Joseph Foundation announced Monday that it was giving a combined $33 million to the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute for Religion, the Modern Orthodox Yeshiva University and the Conservative movement’s Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Congress Delays Iran Sanctions Bill, With AIPAC Blessing

05/25/2010 | Ron Kampeas | JTA

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- In a sign of closer White House-congressional coordination on Iran, Congress is delaying an Iran sanctions bill several weeks to give the Obama administration time to shepherd new sanctions through the U.N. Security Council.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee blessed the delay, in part because an array of parallel measures are under consideration that would stiffen existing sanctions aimed at getting the Iranian regime to stand down from its suspected nuclear weapons program.

Netanyahu Says Israel’s National Security Exercises Routine

05/24/2010 | JTA

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Israel's national home front exercise is routine and not the result of a worsening security situation, Benjamin Netanyahu said.

In announcing the exercise, which will include warning sirens throughout the country, Israel's prime minister said Sunday at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting that "This is a routine exercise that has been scheduled for some time. I would like to make it clear that it is not the result of any exceptional security development.
