Israeli officials said the time was near to consider a military strike on Iran.

"Today, unlike the past, the world has no doubt that Iran’s nuclear program is steadily nearing readiness and is about to enter an ‘immunity zone," Ehud Barak, the defense minister, said Thursday at the Herzliya Conference at the Interdisciplinary Center's conference, in remarks reported by Bloomberg News.

The 'immunity zone' refers to the point beyond which military experts believe it will be impossible to slow Iran's nuclear program with a strike.

The federation made the announcement Monday and will bestow the honor at a Feb. 4 ceremony in Little Rock marking its 100th anniversary celebration dinner.

NEW YORK (JTA) -- A $2.5 million gift from the David Berg Foundation will be used to establish a rare books room at the Center for Jewish History in New York.

The center, which announced the gift earlier this month, houses the collections of the American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

President Dilma Rousseff and several Jewish and non-Jewish officials attended a Holocaust remembrance ceremony held Jan. 29 in Salvador, Brazil's third largest city.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Members of Israel's Likud Party went to the polls to elect a party chairman and a new Central Committee, more than a year before scheduled national elections.

Prime Minister Netanyahu on Tuesday is expected to be elected party chairman for the fifth time in 18 years.

He is being challenged by party hardliner Moshe Feiglin of the Jewish Leadership faction of the party.

Feiglin is working to garner more than 24 percent of the vote, which is what he polled in the 2007 contest.

(JTA) -- The 19-year-old man charged in attacks on two northern New Jersey synagogues confessed to the crimes, prosecutors said.

Anthony Graziano confessed to the Jan. 11 firebomb attack on a synagogue and residence in Rutherford and the Jan. 3 arson attack on a synagogue in Paramus, Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Martin Delaney said Tuesday, according to reports.

Also Tuesday, Graziano pleaded not guilty to additional charges that he planned to attack the Jewish Community Center of Paramus.

(JTA) -- The leader of an Austrian far-right political party was condemned for comparing protests by students in Vienna with the Nazi persecution of Jews during Kristallnacht.

The Anti-Defamation League on Monday slammed the comments made Jan. 27 by Austrian Freedom Party leader Heinz-Christian Strache in response to heckling from leftist and radical protesters outside the Wiener Korporations-Ball in Vienna.
