Reform Rabbi Considering Senate Run

Rabbi Jonah Pesner, a senior vice president of the Union of Reform Judaism and the founding director of Just Congregations, the union’s community organizing arm, is considering a run for Senate as a Democrat in the Massachusetts special election to succeed John Kerry, according to the blog “Talking Politics.”

Pesner began having “exploratory conversations” about three weeks ago, and is moving forward with the process, he told the blogger, David Bernstein, who blogs for the Phoenix, a weekly newspaper and website in the Boston area.

Romney To Meet In Boston With Jewish Donors

 Mitt Romney is meeting with about 30 major Jewish donors to his presidential campaign as part of a "constituents day."

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and all-but-certain Republican nominee for president, will meet for about an hour with the donors in Boston on Thursday.

A donor who was invited told JTA that the purpose of the meeting would be an exchange of views.

There would be other meetings the same day with other constituent groups, the donor said, confirming reports of the meeting from a number of Jewish community officials.

WASHINGTON (JTA) – Leading Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney took six of 10 states in Super Tuesday primaries, including a narrow victory in coveted Ohio.

Also in Ohio, Republicans selected a Jewish veteran to run for the U.S. Senate and longtime Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a consistent critic of Israel, lost in a Democratic primary.

Mass. Swears In First Jewish Statewide Official in Half Century

(JTA) -- Steven Grossman became the first Jewish statewide elected official in Massachusetts in 53 years when he was sworn in as its new treasurer.

Grossman, who took the oath Thursday, is a former chairman of the state and national Democratic parties, as well as the former chair of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Mass. Pension Fund to Divest From Iran

WASHINGTON (JTA ) -- The Massachusetts state Legislature adopted a measure requiring the state’s pension fund to divest from foreign oil and gas companies that do more than $20 million in business with Iran.

The legislation, which passed by a wide margin July 29, is similar to bills adopted in Florida and Ohio.

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said the new federal sanctions against Iran encourage the states to pass such bills. Frank, a strong supporter of the bill, wrote letters to the state speaker of the house and Senate president urging them to vote for it.
