Zuckerberg Marries A Doctor

I’ve held back so far on addressing this year’s Big Intermarriage: the wedding of Facebook Impresario Mark Zuckerberg and longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

The happy couple.

What Would You Do With $16 Billion?

God is surely well-accustomed to all those vows from Lotto players, gamblers and risk-taking Wall Street investors about how much they’d give to charity if they hit paydirt. Even more than the Bucket List of things to do before we die, most people who aren’t wealthy have their own list of charities and worthy causes they would love to be able to bankroll before splurging on fast cars, big houses, exotic vacation and, for some, maybe settling their overdue day school tuition balance.

Mark Zuckerberg will become the second richest man in America today.

It's Your Friends, Not Facebook, That You're Addicted To

I recently heard a rabbi trash Facebook, in no uncertain terms in his sermon, attacking the preeminent social network as a virtual mine for gossip and haven for people who have no shame.

Facebook Sued for $1 Billion Over Third Intifada Page

04/03/2011

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Facebook and its co-founder Mark Zuckerberg are being sued for more than $1 billion for not immediately taking down a page calling for a Third Intifada against Israel.

The lawsuit was filed March 31 in U.S. District Court in Washington on behalf of Larry Klayman, an attorney and activist who is described in the filing as "an American citizen of Jewish origin" who is "active in all matters concerning the security of Israel and its people." Klayman is the founder of Judicial Watch, a conservative public interest group.

Facebook to Monitor Intifada Page, Won’t Remove It

03/28/2011

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Facebook will monitor a page calling for a third Palestinian uprising against Israel but will not remove it.

"Third Palestinian Intifada," established on Facebook less than a month ago, calls for a third Palestinian uprising to begin May 15. The page, which as of March 27 had more than 330,000 friends, includes quotes and film clips calling for killing Jews and Israelis, and for "liberating" Jerusalem and Palestine using violence. It also directs users to related content on Twitter, YouTube and elsewhere.

Battle Hymn of the Asian-Jewish Power Couple

This summer novelist Gary Shteyngart told New York Magazine that he is engaged to a Korean-American woman. (Sadly, when I e-mailed him, playing up our shared alma mater Oberlin  and hoping to feature him in a column, he declined to be interviewed, writing “I'm totally down with intermarriage and would love to talk about it, but my fiancee is very publicity-shy and I swore not to bring her into any media light.”)

Soon after, the New Yorker reported that Facebook Emperor Mark Zuckerberg is expected to marry Priscilla Chan, a Chinese-American medical student.
And then Tiger Mom Amy Chua jumped into the media spotlight, with Jewish hubby Jed Rubenfeld and their bat mitzvahed, sleepover-deprived daughters Sophia and Lulu in tow.

Jewish Filmmakers Do Well in Golden Globe Nominations

12/27/2010

LOS ANGELES (JTA) – Jewish actors, directors and screenwriters scored well in nominations for the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, auguring well for the upcoming Oscar picks.

Two top favorites for best motion picture honors, “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network,” announced earlier this month, led the field with seven and six Golden Globe nods respectively.
