Israel’s Channel 1 reported on Wednesday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas served as a Syrian-based KGB agent in the 1980s. The report, based on research done by Isabella Ginor and Gideon Remez of the Truman Institute, came to light after examination of the Mitrokhin Archive.

Another missed opportunity

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas blew it.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu handed him a major political victory on a platter and Abbas dropped it.

In his zeal to block a French-led effort to convene an international Middle East peace conference, Netanyahu told his French counterpart that such a meeting would be useless, but he's ready to "fly to Paris tomorrow" for one-on-one negotiations with the Palestinian leader.

When Yes Means No

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week unequivocally rejected the French proposal for a Middle East peace conference involving some two dozen nations to be held in Paris this summer.  He said the only way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is by "direct bilateral negotiations" and he's "ready immediately to begin" talks "without any preconditions."

That may be what he said, but it's not what he meant.

The French say their goal is to revive negotiations for a two-state solution.

'16 Candidates & Israel

Beyond the swagger and machismo about carpeting bombing the s**t out of ISIS and making what already is the strongest military in the world the strongest military in the world, there's been little substantive discussion of foreign and defense policy in this campaign beyond staff-written position papers posted on the candidates' web sites.

And to see those documents you often have to give your name and email address so you can be deluged with press releases and appeals for contributions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at a meeting in Berlin called for an end to incitement to violence against Israelis.

Netanyahu singled out Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for blame.

“I think it’s time for the international community to say clearly to President Abbas: Stop spreading lies about Israel. Lies that Israel wants to change the status quo on the Temple Mount, lies that Israel wants to tear down the Al-Aqsa mosque, and lies that Israel is executing Palestinians. All that is false,” Netanyahu said Thursday in Germany.
