School’s suit over Kohl’s contest is tossed

(JTA) -- A lawsuit filed by a Florida school against two Jewish day schools in the state over a national online contest sponsored by Kohl's was dismissed.

A judge in Broward County, Fla., dismissed the suit on March 3, saying that the owners of the Abi's Place school for disabled children could not prove that it had an official deal with the Hebrew Academy Community School and Rohr Bais Chaya Academy to help Abi's win votes.

(JTA) -- A school in Florida that nearly won Kohl's national online contest has sued two Florida Jewish Day schools that did win, saying they reneged on their promise to help.

Abi's Place in Coral Springs filed a lawsuit against Hebrew Academy Community School and Bais Chaya Inc. in Broward County, where all the schools are located, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.

 For Charlotte Jewish Day School, $500,000 could mean complete overhaul of school-wide technology, construction of a brand-new playground, or redevelopment of its individualized curriculum for 110 students.

“Jewish day school education, especially in cities where you’re the only Jewish day school, isn’t always on the front burner,” said Mariashi Groner, founder and director of the elementary school. With an extra half a million dollars, “We would be seen as a force to contend with,” she said.
