The Jewish Week is committed to your privacy and the security of the information you provide to us during your visit to our Website.  We have posted this privacy policy (the “Privacy Policy”) in order to explain our privacy policies, information collection practices and the choices you have about the way information is collected and used. All capitalized terms that are not defined herein shall have those meanings prescribed to them in The Jewish Week’s terms of use for the Website (the “Terms of Use”), of which this Privacy Policy is incorporated into, and made a part of.  Consistent with the Terms of Use, by use of the Website you agree to be bound by this Privacy Policy, as may be modified from time to time. 

Updates

The Jewish Week reserves the right to update or revise this Privacy Policy at any time, in its sole discretion.  As we continue to develop our Website and take advantage of advances in technology to improve the services we offer, this Privacy Policy likely will change.  We will post any changes on the Privacy Policy page of the Website and will revise the “updated” date at the end of this Privacy Policy, but we have no other obligation to notify you of such changes.  We therefore encourage you to refer to this policy on an ongoing basis so that you understand our current privacy policies and practices.  

Security

We take appropriate physical, electronic and administrative steps that are reasonably designed to maintain the security and accuracy of personally identifiable information we collect, including limiting the number of people who have physical access to our database servers, as well as employing electronic security systems and password protections that guard against unauthorized access.  Except as otherwise provided in the Terms of Use, it is prohibited to violate or attempt to violate the security or test the vulnerability of this Website in any manner.  Such violations could result in civil or criminal penalties to the extent consistent with applicable law.  See the “User Conduct” section of the Terms of Use for further information. 

Personally identifiable information provided on the Website in connection with online credit card transactions are transmitted through a secure server using Secure Socket Layering (SSL) encryption technology.  When the letters "http" in the URL change to "https," the "s" indicates you are in a secure area employing SSL; also, your browser may give you a pop-up message that you're about to enter a secure area.  SSL protects your personally identifiable information during data transport.  Please note that e-mail is not encrypted and is not considered to be a secure means of transmitting personally identifiable information or credit card information.  Although we will exercise reasonable care in providing secure transmission of information between your computer and our servers or the servers of third-party service providers we may use, and in storing that information on our systems, or a third-party service provider’s system, no method of transmission over the Internet, or of electronic storage, is 100% secure. So we cannot ensure or guarantee the security of any information transmitted to us over the Internet. 

The Information We Collect

We receive and store two types of information through the Website: (1) personally identifiable information that you supply voluntarily through certain interactive functionality available on the Website or as a result of the Website; and (2) automatic information, such as aggregate tracking and site usage information that we gather on an anonymous basis when you access our Website, in each case, as further described below.  Except as described above, you may browse the Website without providing any personally identifiable information. In certain cases where you choose not to provide us with personally identifiable information, you may not be able to access all or certain areas of this Website, participate in all of its features. “Personally identifiable information” and “automatic information” shall collectively be referred to herein as “information.”

Personally Identifiable Information:

We may collect personally identifiable information, such as your name, gender, address, telephone number and e-mail address, interests, age, content and/or service preferences or other related information when you (i) register for a user account on the Website, (ii) request a new username and/or password, (iii) communicate with The Jewish Week or its representatives through or as a result of the Website (including by phone, mail, e-mail, fax or paper correspondence), (iv) subscribe to newsletters or “special offers” lists, (v) subscribe (for yourself or third persons through a gift subscription) to The Jewish Week print version or for “premium” content on the Website, (vi) enter transactions, sweepstakes, promotions or contests, or (vii) otherwise provide User-Generated Content at various times and places on or through this Website (such as our blog, chat, e-mail, photo/video upload, calendar, classifieds, social networking or similar interactive areas of the Website).  If you subscribe to the print version of The Jewish Week or “premium” content offered through the Website, we will also collect your credit card account number, expiration date, and related information to allow us or our third party service providers to process such credit card transaction; provided however, that we delete such credit card information from our secure servers within fifteen (15) days from when it is collected.  Please see the “User-Generated Content” and “Submission Rules and Restrictions” sections of the Terms of Use, regarding the treatment of personally identifiable information in User-Generated Content.  Except as otherwise provided herein and in the Terms of Use, any User-Generated Content you transmit to us (whether or not it contains personally identifiable information) is sent at your own risk and will receive non-confidential treatment.  

Automatic Information; Tracking and Website Usage:

When you visit this Website, The Jewish Week or its approved third party service providers automatically collects anonymous information about you, such as the webpages you view, page impressions (which are requests to load a single webpage of a given Internet site), the number of links you click within the Website, the date and time of your visit, and your computer’s IP address, among other things.  The Jewish Week or its approved third party service providers also use “cookies” to recognize your computer (but not specifically who is using it), as well as to identify the pages you click on during your visit to our Website and the name of the website you visited immediately before visiting the Website, among other things.  You have the ability to accept or decline cookies.  Most browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies.  If you reject cookies by changing your browser settings, please be aware that this may disable some of the functionality that would otherwise be available to you on our Website.  We may aggregate and/or otherwise use the aforementioned automatic information for a number of purposes, such as improving our Website’s design, editorial content, service offerings, customer service, and special promotions.  We may associate automatic information with your personally identifiable information, in which case, such automatic information will be considered personally identifiable information.  

How We Use The Information We Collect

We use the information we collect for various purposes, including: 

  1. to provide the services and/or content you request
  2. to process and complete subscription transactions or provide access to premium content on the Website. 
  3. to communicate with you for promotional and marketing purposes and send you offerings by mail, phone, e-mail or similar methods
  4.  to keep you informed about the status of news and events pertaining to The Jewish Week and its covered content (including newsletters).
  5.  to identify your content and/or service preferences, so we can notify you of new or additional services, and promotions/polls/sweepstakes or “special offers” that might be of interest to you.
  6. to administer the Website and analyze its usage.

Compliance with Law: We may provide access to information we collect through the Website to the appropriate parties when legally required to do so, to cooperate with police investigations, regulatory or legal proceedings, to protect against misuse or unauthorized use of our Website, to limit our legal liability and protect our rights or to protect the rights, property or safety of users of this Website or the public.  

Service Providers and Other Third Parties: We may also provide access to personally identifiable information and automatic information to The Jewish Week’s approved third party service providers, including those that provide e-commerce functionality  (i.e., credit card processing) in connection with our Website, providers that host or help support the Website or otherwise provide technical or customer service assistance, in each case, only to the extent necessary for the third party to provide such service.  It is The Jewish Week’s policy to require its third-party service providers to hold such information in confidence and not disclose the same with others or use the information for purposes other than to maintain the services they provide to The Jewish Week.  On occasion, we enter into promotional or marketing arrangements with certain approved third parties whereby we distribute such third party’s materials to our users or readers using our proprietary marketing or customer lists without providing third party access.  See also the “E-Mails” section below. 

Children's Privacy

Protecting children's privacy is important to us.  Our Website is a general audience site.  We do not collect or maintain information from those we actually know are under 13, and no part of our Website is targeted to attract anyone under 13.  We also do not correspond with anyone who tells us that they are between the ages of 13 and 18 without their parent's or guardian’s consent unless he/she is an emancipated minor.  Our sweepstakes and similar promotions are restricted to entrants who are at least 18 years old.  Please also see the “General” and “User-Generated Content” sections of the Terms of Use for further information.   

Your California Privacy Rights

Under California Civil Code sections 1798.83-1798.84, California residents are entitled to ask us for a notice describing what categories of personal customer information we share with third parties or affiliates for those third parties or affiliates' direct marketing purposes.  That notice will identify the categories of information shared and will include a list of the third parties and affiliates with which it was shared, along with their names and addresses. This Privacy Policy solely applies to information collected, directly or indirectly, by our Website.  In accordance with the Terms of Use, our Website may contain links to other websites operated by third parties Please be aware that our privacy practices may differ from those of third parties and we are not responsible for the privacy practices of such third parties or their websites.  If you provide information at a third party website, you are subject to the privacy policy of the operator of that website and not The Jewish Week’s Privacy Policy or Terms of Use.  Make sure you understand any such third party website's privacy policies before providing personal information at such website(s).  The provision of external links to other websites is a common practice on the Internet and it in no way indicates that we endorse or approve the linked company, or its products, content, services or website.

E-mails

You may receive promotional e-mails from us or certain third parties we approve only if you have consented to receive them, and only to the extent consistent with the terms hereof.  If you do not want to receive such promotional e-mails, you can click on the unsubscribe link and hit send at the bottom of any e-mail communication sent by us or you can notify us in writing – see the “Contact Us” section below.  Please allow us up to five (5) business days from when the request was received to complete the unsubscribe request.  The Jewish Week seeks to comply with the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act) in any and all promotional e-mails or similar campaigns we may undertake.  Any e-mails from you to The Jewish Week (for example, to various representatives or departments of The Jewish Week or otherwise through the Website) shall be treated in accordance with the “User Generated Content” section of the Terms of Use.
