An unfortunate local controversy involving the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and the former leadership of the Newberger Hillel at the University of Chicago has attracted widespread attention. Some of the commentary has cast the issue as setting a stodgy, anachronistic establishment up against creative, exciting innovation (“Are We Overly Invested In Bricks And Mortar?” Editor’s column, May 4).

U Of Chicago Faculty Members Blame Federation For Hillel Crisis

A group of 37 faculty members at the University of Chicago sent a blistering letter charging the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago with a “total lack of regard for the values” of the university and community in its decision to fire the popular executive director of the school’s Hillel, along with its 17 board members.

The action was taken several weeks ago after the Federation and Hillel reached an impasse over the Jewish campus group’s request for autonomy.
