As the June 1 Israel Parade draws closer, some organizations are threatening not to march. They are protesting the decision of parade sponsors to allow organizations like the New Israel Fund– a favorite target of the right wing of the Zionist movement– to be included in the parade, because of its alleged sympathy for the BDS strategy (boycott, divestment and sanction) designed to modify Israel’s position on settlements in the West Bank. The NIF steadfastly denies supporting BDS. They (the more right-wing organizations) feel that the NIF and its friends should have no place at the Zionist table, or at a parade that salutes Israel. And as long as they do, these more right-wing organizations won’t march.

To be clear: I have been a big booster of the Celebrate Israel parade, personally and professionally, for many years, and once again felt a real sense of pride on Sunday afternoon watching the waves of youngsters carrying banners and singing Hebrew songs as they marched up Fifth Avenue.

Each year the New York Jewish community takes pride in hosting the largest gathering of support for Israel in the world. But it would be even better if more of us came out to show our connection to, love for and solidarity with the Jewish state by taking part in the annual celebration.

Some 35,000 marchers will be stepping out Sunday for the annual Celebrate Israel Parade up Fifth Avenue under banners heralding this year’s theme, “Israel Branches Out.” And for the second year in a row, Channel 9 will carry the parade live from noon until 2 p.m.

“Year after year the parade never ceases to be a thrilling experience, bringing the unflagging spirit of Israel to the streets of New York,” said Michael Miller, executive vice president and CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, the parade organizer.
