This week the House of Representatives passed a resolution opposing any unilateral Palestinian move toward statehood after a few days of fierce lobbying by both opponents and supporters.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- The top Republican and Democrat House foreign policy members called on the Obama administration to more closely scrutinize nations that do not comply with Iran sanctions.

Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), the outgoing chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, convened a hearing Wednesday on imposing tougher sanctions on Iran.

Joint Congressional Letter Questions Saudi Arms Deal

(JTA) -- A joint congressional letter raising concerns and asking questions about a proposed $60 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia was delivered to Obama administration officials.

The bipartisan letter, signed by 198 U.S. lawmakers, was delivered Nov. 12 to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Foreign Policy magazine reported.

The letter was coordinated jointly by outgoing House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Howard Berman (D-Calif.) and incoming chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), according to the report.

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A historic Republican sweep of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday has propelled Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the minority whip, to the verge of becoming the highest-ranking Jew in U.S. political history.

"We are excited for Eric Cantor to become the next House Majority leader," said Matt Brooks, director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. "The highest ranking Jew to ever serve in the House!"

Berman, Lowey Block Military Funding to Lebanon

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Two members of Congress independently placed holds on military aid to Lebanon.

Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee, separately blocked a $100 million security assistance package to the Lebanese military. Berman placed the hold Aug. 2, one day before the Lebanese military fired at Israeli soldiers working on the border, while Lowey’s hold came after the incident.
