Simple. Beautiful. Kushner.
Schmoozing and snacking with Kim Kushner at her book signing.

This morning I hopped on the crosstown bus to the Upper East Side's Eli's Manhattan supermarket — but I didn't travel  all that way from Morningside Heights for groceries. Kim Kushner, author of the new kosher cookbook, The Modern Menu, was holding a book signing and food sampling of her "simple, beautiful, kosher," recipes. Mothers with children in tow schmoozed with Kushner about their favorite recipes from the book, and some attended the event to pick up another copy for a relative. Several of Kushner's recipes were available to sample, carefully selected by Eli Zabar himself! Take a look at the photo gallery to get a visual taste of what The Modern Menu has to offer. Below are the ingredients used in the two dishes I sampled.

Pistachio Pesto Farfalle:

  • 16 oz farfalle pasta
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 head of garlic
  • Pistachios
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Kosh salt
  • Black pepper
  • (optional: add chicken breast or fish for an all-in-one meal. Topping with parmesan or bocconcini is delicious as well).

Heirloom Tomatoes with Mint and Cilantro:

  • 6 heirloom tomaties of different shapes, sizes and colors
  • 1 bunch mint
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 avocado
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • White wine
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
