As the International Sephardic Education Foundation (ISEF) honored David E. R. Dangoor for his philanthropic work as president of the American Sephardic Federation and board member of ISEF, he took the opportunity to speak out for the thousands of Jewish refugees from the Arab world.

He reminded that “well over 50 percent of Israel’s population stems from the Arab world. Israel is no European or western annex.”

Dangoor was born 62 years ago in Tehran of an Iraqi father and Austrian mother, and raised in Stockholm. He is a longtime board member of Lorillard and president of Innoventive Partners, marketing consultants.

The American Sephardic Federation spurred the U.S. Congress in 2008 to recognize the nearly one million Jewish refugees from nine Arab countries and to adopt a unanimous resolution “that their destiny must be recognized in any peace deals,” Dangoor said.

He spearheaded efforts to make Israel take the same stand, recalling that last September Israel hosted an event at the United Nations about “the forgotten refugees” that outnumber the original Palestinian refugees.

“Israel has now also stated that their destiny must be recognized in any peace settlement,” Dangoor said.

ISEF president Nina A. Weiner presented Dangoor with a lifetime achievement award this month at the Plaza Hotel in New York. She joined Edmond J. Safra and Lily Safra in 1977 to found the organization which provides scholarships to gifted Israeli students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We are proud of our 5,000 alumni,” Weiner said.
