There's nothing quite like a steaming bowl of soup on a freezing winter day. And while chicken soup is known as the "Jewish penicillin" don't limit yourself to a nice bowl of broth, when there are so many other options out there to experiment with.

Sometimes simple is the best, like this mushroom barley soup, which is rich, hearty and easy to make.

Butternut squash soup is thick and creamy, and is a beautiful orange color.

You can make a delicious meal out of this beef, leek and barley soup - put it on and let it simmer all day until dinner.

Chicken soup is amazing, obviously, but push it up to the next level with dumplings for the southern classic Chicken and Dumplings.

Winter vegetables take center stage in a thick potato leek soup.

Whichever you choose, you'll keep going back for just one more bowl!
